Ruben Richards
Crime buster

"Keep your hands off our children." This is the message Ruben Richards, ORA committee member looking after crime in Observatory, sent quite clearly to two youths who mugged kids outside his gate on Saturday.

"Two Grade 9 pupils from Sacred Heart College came to visit my son, Daniel, Saturday morning, but were mugged by the two youths while waiting for the gate to open," says Ruben.

When Ruben heard about the mugging, he bundled the two teenagers into his car and scoured the streets for the youths. "We drove around for half an hour and eventually spotted the two youths in St Peter's Road. I stopped next to them, rolled down the window and called them over."

Then things happened lightning fast: "I jumped out of the car, handcuffed the one youth before he knew what hit him and then handcuffed the other one. Within seconds they were in my car en route to the Yeoville Police station."

The two youths were detained there on charges of robbery and will appear in court today (Monday, 20 March).

"The kids from all the schools in Observatory are vulnerable to muggings: You hear every second day about a kid that was mugged in Mons Road, or Eckstein Street. It is unacceptable. Our streets must be safe for our children to walk," says Ruben.
