PROPOSAL 1
WENDY MICHAELIS and AILEEN SHIFREN’s proposal for the Jewish Guild Bowling Club: 1. Existing clubhouse The clubhouse to be kept and renovated if needed. It could then be used for: Space could be rented to gym teachers, yoga teachers, keep fit teachers, bridge teachers, bead-work teachers, Weight Watchers/Weigh Less etc for small groups to avoid traffic and noise. The clubhouse could be used by Observatory residents for parties or functions. There would be a fee. Or Rented out for small functions to other parties. The clubhouse could be used by Observatory residents for social evenings such as a card evening, movie evenings, music evenings, etc. Costs would be minimal as there is no major alterations and/or renovations to be made. Crockery, cutlery and an urn will have to be purchased if there is none available in the clubhouse. 2. Existing greens One green to be kept for use by Observatory who would like to have a game with friends. There would be a small fee. Or Rented to other bowling clubs who are short of space. The other greens to be turned into tennis courts. These could be: Rented to a tennis coach Used by Observatory residents on a booking basis for a small fee. 3. Other ground The remaining ground could be turned into a garden with trees that attract birds. Bird baths and benches could be placed here for all to enjoy the garden. Costs would be minimal as there are already trees on the ground. We have not done any costing for this [proposal as the building and/or grounds would have to be inspected to assess what would have to be done in respect of renovations, fixing, purchases, etc. There is already a caretaker on the property paid for by the Jewish Guild to maintain the property and maybe he can be retained in the same capacity. The idea would be for this recreational centre for the residents of Observatory to be income producing after initial costs have been paid. PROPOSAL 2
INA LIOZIDES proposes: Regarding suggestions as to the future use of the Jewish Guild Bowling Club, we learnt last night that members may well return to the bowling greens. It is unclear to me whether the club will financially be afloat to continue, or not. Should they be in need of financial assistance - or should they perhaps not revive their club and the premises are available to other instances, my suggestion will be for the buildings to be opened to adult clubs, societies and the like. A few come to mind: women’s clubs i.e. Consumer league or tea clubs, bridge clubs, yoga classes, arts and crafts (and there are many), garden clubs (here plants and pottery etc could be sold), and a host of other “get-together” clubs or societies – perhaps even our own “strictly come dancing” classes. I feel that with adults, discipline and control would be far less of a responsibility. The bar could be utilized as such and the kitchen will cater for each instance’s need. Rentals will obviously be charged. The grounds will be improved and maintained to be enjoyed by members and visitors. Should the bowling club wish to continue and increase membership – ORA could assist by calling for residents to join - and the club itself, could put out notices to this effect. If at all possible, a detailed report on discussions between yourself and the bowling club (posted on the website) will help us understand exactly the position they are in and we are faced with. Report-backs at the ORA meeting are vague and cut short.
PROPOSAL 3
Alan Brainin proposes:
Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School: Revolutionizing the way in which we promote and develop our children through the greatest game in the world – soccer. About Alan Brainin: “I have two passions in life – one is my FAMILY and the other is SOCCER! I have played the game at all levels in South Africa and have played in the USA at collegiate level. I played at provincial level throughout my junior soccer career and I played in the National Professional Soccer League in 1986. I then left South Africa on a soccer scholarship to the USA. I was involved in assisting in soccer clinics in Las Vegas. I played for South Africa at the Maccabi Games in Israel in 1985. My passion has always been to be involved in soccer full time. To give back a little to the game that took me to Brazil, Israel and the USA, a game that allowed me to see the world and to fulfill a dream. A dream that I would like to make possible for other kids that deserve the same opportunities I had growing up in South Africa.”
Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School-- Mission and Concept: Our Mission: To inspire, encourage and empower youth through participation in world class soccer events. Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School will provide world class facilities where all youth will be welcome as equal participants while they develop as leaders and responsible citizens in their community. Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School kids will strive for excellence in all of the soccer events, within the greater context of striving for excellence as people, by practicing honesty, integrity, teamwork and commitment to education, family and community. The Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School Concept: We are dedicated to combining inclusiveness with access to world class sports facilities. Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School founders are passionate about providing top facilities, which in the past were for the exclusive use of middle to upper class families, to all our youth. This was due to the simple reality of economic demographics and the relative cost of facilities, equipment and participation. Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School believes it is possible to change that reality. Our vision goes beyond providing unique and equal sports opportunities for youth. We will be working towards making Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School a place for our kids to come and be in a safe social environment, while developing through the greatest game in the world, soccer. Studies have shown that after-school hours, from three to six in the evening, represent a pivotal time for children. By far the greatest percentage of high-risk behaviours, such as substance abuse, crime and teen pregnancy, take place during these hours after school and before many parents return from work. We will invite kids to be here during these hours even if they are not playing or practicing. Whether it is sports or socializing that brings them to Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School, they will be in a safe and engaging environment that provides an alternative to high risk behaviour. A future development for the academy will be to introduce our Kids of Tomorrow – we will offer events for young kids from 18 months to 6 years old. The Runnin’ Rebels Kids of Tomorrow (KoT) program is designed to enhance gross motor skills and cognitive development for our young kids through games and activities supported by the game of soccer in a non competitive free play environment. Tiny Runnin’ Rebels KoT 18 month to 3 years – parent / child class: A fun exploration and introduction into child development using colours, numbers, soccer and more, parents and their children will enjoy this 40min one day a week class together. Little Runnin’ Rebels KoT3 years to 4 years – With an emphasis on balance and co-ordination these young players will begin to explore basic soccer fundamentals and enhance their foot/eye co-ordination. Each class is 50min long one day per week and will include instruction and some game play. Junior Runnin’ Rebels KoT5 years to 6 years – In this class children will begin fine tuning their basic soccer fundamentals and begin preparation for entry into the Runnin’ Rebels Youth Development Centre training program. Soccer Camps: At Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School whether you are just beginning your soccer career, are looking to hone your skills for the PSL or looking to be chosen for a soccer scholarship in the USA or you are a goalkeeper looking to refine your technique, “Play Like Champions Soccer School” offers professional quality training right in your backyard.
7. Seminars: Professional people will be involved in the Runnin’ Rebels Soccer School to run different seminars - for example: A nutrition seminar – With the busy schedule of families and the constant on the go pressure to get from one place to the next, it can be hard to develop a pattern of healthy eating and snacking habits for young kids. As players mature and grow their nutritional needs become more and more important to their overall success. One of the philosophies of the Runnin’ Rebels Youth Development Centre program is to help each player maximize their potential, both on and off the field. The fueling of your child’s body for sport nutritional seminar is designed to provide parents with some extra information on how to help your young athlete make healthy, well balanced food choices. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read through this concept, I believe we all can make a difference even if it is only to fulfill one kids dream of going all the way in sport or life, if this is true, we will look back and say – it was worth it!
