Carine Hartman
Portfolio: Chairwoman
Resident in St Georges Rd

Some of you will know her as your web mistress too. Carine is a freelance journalist and graphic designer, who rolled up her sleeves for the community since May last year when she heard talks about a "planner" for the suburb. She has worked tirelessly to raise money to pay him - and as the new chairwoman of ORA has big dreams for Observatory. Read more about them by clicking here Oh - and she has 4 children ranging between 26 and 6 years old, loves computers, web sites, wine, smoking and her husband...

Rachel Browne
Portfolio: Keep Observatory Clean
Resident in Observatory Ave

Rachel has been a home owner in Observatory since 1987. "People may remember a time in the early nineties when my home became a medidation centre. I was in Cape Town during that period. People may also remember a sign on my gate that said Badia Trading. I had a small craft selling business that I ran from home for some years." Then she decided to grow on and went back to University and graduated with a masters in public and development management in 2005. She is now working as Minister Geraldine Fraser Moleketi's researcher in her ministry.
"I love Observatory and cannot think of living anywhere else. I have found however over the years that neighbourliness is not a word that I would ascribe to my corner of the suburb. There is insufficient civic and public spirit and too much suspicion and laagering. I am very pleased that the suburb is finally opening up and becoming normal with South Africans from all cultures coming to live in it. I am very keen to get Observatarians out of their gates and onto their streets. I am keen for Observatory to work with Yeoville to help it turn itself around - not to return it to what it was, but to help it develop and grow its own new unique character. I want to be able to walk back up Rockey Street and sit on a pavement and drink a coffee or eat a meal again. I want a lot to happen and realise that it can only happen if we as residents make it happen. That is why I have joined the ORA committee.
"We need to look forward and not back. If we want to, we can turn Observatory into a model of development - one that looks at long term goals, goals that are sustainable and that make sense to us all. Our work is to build the strong foundations that are needed to set our suburb on the road to development heaven!"
Amen

Thomas Mann
Portfolio: Enforcing by-laws
Resident in Observatory Avenue

Thomas, previous chairman of ORA, is an electrical contractor and ordained priest of St Alban Liberal Catholic Church in Observatory. Why the full-time job as electrical contractor? Due to the church's constitution priests do not receive any stipend. He has been a member of the school of Practical Philosophy for the last 35 years as a student and tutor and has an interest in languages and their cultures.
